A fresh and exciting take on Bahamianhistory education has now popped up on the Bahamian literary landscape. TheAdventures of Koen - Journeys with Bahamian Heroes, a comic-style educationalchildren’s book by real estate advisor and entrepreneur turned author LazarDelorenzo Charlton takes young and older readers alike through a dynamic storylinethat gives a short course on one of our most notable nation builders. The life andachievements of Sir Lynden Pindling are highlighted in the book, the first in a seriesaccording to the author. The book’s protagonist, Koen Burrows, is based on the reallife younger cousin of the author, and is illustrated by Bahamian artist and motiondesigner, Dahar Butler.

Lazar shared, “I’m very close to my family and I’ve become increasingly fascinatedwith certain nodes of Bahamian history as it relates to youth education which is whatinspired me to start this project. I wanted to contribute to Bahamian history educationand I’ve always loved comic books as a child. The colorful depictions and dynamicstorylines always captivated me and others in my peer group so I knew it would be agreat channel for kids to learn rather than the usual books with pages filled withwords. Teaming up with Dahar to achieve that was beyond exciting. My ultimate goalis to have my books be a permanent fixture in the Bahamian education system toensure our children learn about Bahamian historical figures and nation builders in afun way, through adventure.”

Charlton’s book series which was endorsed by members of the Pindling family hasalready started to make its way into bookstores and homes across New Providenncefollowing a book signing and release event at Cocoplum Bistro at the end of October.

Michelle Pindling-Sands, daughter of Sir Lynden Pindling added, “First, congratulations to Mr. Charlton and Mr. Butler on their great accomplishment. TheAdventures of Koen was a treat to read, as it chronicles the achievements of myfather in a fun, witty, and relatable way. It is a book that all students could grasp andenjoy to obtain a quick glance into Bahamian history while highlighting keysuccesses of my father, Sir Lynden Pindling. It is so crucial that our history remainsprevalent in our school systems, so we commend you on this endeavor. We lookforward to following Koen on his next adventures with other Bahamian nationalheroes!”
